Drying Sneakers Without Damage
More shoes are ruined during drying than during cleaning. The cleaning is careful, deliberate, and slow; the drying is an afterthought done in a hurry, usually with heat, which is the one input that can permanently change nearly every material a sneaker is made of. The rules are short. The reasons are worth understanding, because they explain what “too warm” actually means.
What heat does to the shoe
Adhesive bonds soften. The shoe is held together at the sole line by adhesive, and warming it is the standard way to make that bond let go. You will rarely see the sole fall off on a radiator — what happens is a bond quietly loses strength and fails weeks later when the shoe flexes. Leather stiffens and shrinks. Wet leather dried fast becomes hard, sometimes visibly misshapen, and the change is not reversible. Slow drying lets it keep its structure.

Foam and mesh trap the heat you apply because they are insulating, so an exterior that feels warm may be sitting on something considerably warmer.
The upshot: no radiators, no hair dryers, no heat guns, no tumble dryers, no direct sun, no parked cars, no airing cupboards. Every one of those is used routinely and every one is a gamble against materials you can’t replace.
The method
1. Blot, don’t wring. Press a clean towel against wet surfaces to pull water out. Never twist or squeeze the shoe — that forces water into seams and stresses the very joins you’re trying to protect.
2. Remove everything removable. Laces and insoles come out and dry separately. They hold a surprising amount of water, and a wet insole left in place keeps the shoe’s interior damp for days.
3. Stuff loosely with absorbent paper. Plain, uncoloured paper is best; newsprint can transfer ink onto a damp lining. The paper does two jobs — it wicks moisture from inside and it holds the upper’s shape while the material is soft and vulnerable to setting in the wrong position. Change the paper when it’s damp, which on a thoroughly wet shoe means a few times in the first hours.
4. Room temperature, moving air, out of the sun. A normal room with a little air circulation is ideal. A fan set to blow across, not at, the shoes speeds things up meaningfully and adds no heat at all — this is the only acceleration worth using.
5. Position for drainage. Upright, or tilted so water can leave rather than pool in the toe. Some people hang shoes by the collar; whatever you do, don’t leave a shoe sole-down in a puddle of its own water.
6. Wait longer than seems necessary. A properly wet pair takes a day or two, sometimes more in humid weather. The exterior dries first and the interior last, so a shoe that feels dry to the touch is usually still damp inside.
How to know it’s actually dry
Touch the interior at the heel and under the tongue — not the outside. Reach in and feel the deepest part you can. A cool, slightly clammy feeling means there’s still moisture there.
Smell it. A closed, faintly stale note is the early warning of a shoe going away in storage.
